Birds are descended from the same group of reptiles as the crocodiles and dinosaurs – in fact we believe that birds are direct descendants of the raptor dinosaurs! Birds have feathers, beaks, wings and lay hard-shelled eggs, but they can’t all fly. Can you think of any birds that can’t fly? Here’s a clue – we have three types here at Twycross Zoo!
However, most can fly and birds have some fantastic adaptions to help them fly, including reducing weight by having honeycomb like bones and no teeth. They also, generally, have excellent eyesight – a key sense when flying through the air.
