New Year Conservation Resolutions 2018

Twycross Zoo has set a 12 month conservation challenge where we plan to resolve 12 Conservation Resolutions throughout 2018 – you can get involved too from the comfort of your home!

Each month we will focus on a new way that we can all look after the planet from eating sustainably to recycling and lots more – we even have fun, hands-on activities that the kids will love too!

Show us your commitment to conserve the planet on Facebook, Twitter an Instagram using #TZResolutions. Let’s begin!

January 2018

‘My January Conservation Resolution is to eat more sustainable fish and avoid eating threatened species’

Did you know that our Humboldt penguins only eat sustainable fish and we only serve sustainable fish in our restaurants?

This is because 90% of the world’s fish stocks are fully or over-exploited from fishing and they face added pressure from climate change and pollution.

On 20th and 21st January 2018, Twycross Zoo will be getting involved with Penguin Awareness Weekend and focusing on marine conservation including sustainable eating.

Pick up a Marine Conservation Society Good Fish Guide from our Zoo Rangers during our daily Penguin Parade here at the zoo which will give you top tips to eat more sustainably.

What can you do to show your support?

Eat More Sustainable Fish

  • Cod, Atlantic – North East Arctic or Iceland (MSC Certified)
  • Herring – Cornwall; Irish Sea (MSC Certified)
  • Prawn, King or Tiger – Farmed (Organic Certified)
  • Salmon, Atlantic – Farmed (Soil Association Organic Certified)
  • Salmon, Pacific (MSC or Alaskan RFM Certified)

February 2018

‘My February Conservation Resolution is to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’

Spring has nearly sprung and as the weather changes (hopefully for the better!) a lot of us are starting to think about our Spring clean – getting rid of all the clutter that has weighed our home down over Christmas and throughout Winter.

Did you know if you recycle just one plastic bottle it would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.

Our Conservation Resolution for February is to make one step to reduce, reuse and recycle everyday items in our home that make an impact on our planet.

For example, in February we will begin to sell reusable travel mugs in our shop to give our visitors the opportunity to avoid using disposable coffee cups and look after the environment. Here’s a few simple steps that you can take from home to make a difference:

What can you do to show your support?

  • When shopping at the supermarket look for items with as little packaging as possible – buy a bunch of banana without the plastic bags.
  • Reduce paper waste by unsubscribing to unwanted mail or opting to receive mail electronically
  • Buy a long lasting thermal cup or water bottle and take it out with you to work or on days out to avoid buying single-use drinks containers

  • Give unwanted toys to friends or family to reuse
  • Reuse cardboard boxes, envelopes, glass jars and plastic bags in your home
  • Take old blankets and towels to your local animal rescue centre so they can use them for animal bedding and cleaning

  • When shopping buy items that can be recycled – for example food in glass jars or tin cans
  • Compost food waste to use in the garden
  • Did you know furniture, electronic equipment, building material and vehicles can be recycled? Bring your old mobile phones to Twycross Zoo and we will recycle them for you!
