Key Stage Four
Learning at Twycross Zoo is unique!
Learning at Twycross Zoo is engaging and inspiring. We provide interactive sessions for Key Stage Four students which linked to all areas of the curriculum.
Our sessions are specially designed to inspire pupils about the natural world around them. Pupils are guided through a 45-minute session by our experienced and award winning education officers. Each session is hosted in our under-cover teaching classrooms and can accommodate up to 30 pupils. All sessions come with free resources for you to use on site or back at school to do post-visit work.
Evolution
We will look at what drives evolution, how variation occurs and how this can affect survival. We will also look at why extinction occurs and how we can work together to save the natural world.
Frankenscience: Right or Wrong?
This session will look at the uses of biotechnology and how it has shaped our modern world. Students will get involved in thought provoking debates to discuss the ethical considerations, and have the opportunity to see this complicated and emotive subject from both sides!
‘Scientific Investigations – Animal Behaviour’
In this cross curricular STEM session, students will take part in their own behaviour study and learn how to measure animal behaviour – just like researchers in the zoo! Students will collect their own data to take back to school to continue the learning, and have the opportunity to discuss why certain animals act the way they do.
Biodiversity and Conservation
Through discussion and investigations pupils will discover the importance of biodiversity, and why all animals are important. We discuss the importance of working together to save the natural world.
Careers at Twycross Zoo
This 45-minute session will provide students with an insight to life at the zoo. During this session we explore the different roles and responsibilities of our employees, and look at the background, qualifications and experience needed to fulfil those roles. The session will focus on the day to day role of keepers, vets and educators and the different routes students can take to gain qualifications and experience needed for these future careers.
What some of our visiting teachers have said about our workshops:
- “A must for any teacher wanting their zoo trip to have a real education focus”
- “Was well linked to the specification and activity really got the message across”
- “Excellent content and learning task, really made the visit for us”
- “Excellent as always, I now build this visit into my scheme of work each year”
