Hello everyone, spring is finally here and no doubt you will have noticed on your visits that we are busy getting the zoo ready for a new season. I hope you have noticed our new modern logo – we felt it was time for a fresh, new look to match our new developments within the zoo.
Giraffes are back for Easter! (I know you will all be happy to see them back!) – a new giraffe habitat is almost finished, opposite the elephant’s area and it will open for the Easter holidays. For Summer 2015 we are opening a new gibbon habitat. The old area will be replaced with a wonderful 4-moated islands complex and a massive two storey inside home for both humans and gibbons to enjoy. We have just completed a new larger café area near the penguins in the Wet ‘n’ Wild Zone which will be open at Easter followed by a brand new huge ‘wet play’ area to open from May Bank Holiday. The orang-utans are getting a 2-storey extension to their home too – work on that has just started. I am also delighted that we are improving our main path – Conservation Way – the new hard surface will be much better for wheelchairs and pushchairs. We will be using a new temporary surface for the car parks over Easter too.
2015 is the first step in developing Twycross Zoo into a modern, world class conservation park. The Twycross team have been working hard over the past year to create a masterplan that will take our zoo forward and develop it into one of the best in the UK ( we are already in the top 10). We launched this masterplan in March to much media attention and I was delighted to welcome both Ian Redmond OBE and Professor Alice Roberts (Our Patron) to speak at our event. Over the next 20 years we will work to become a landmark tourist venue, as well as to continue to develop our reputation as an internationally respected hub of animal conservation, research and education. The next stage of our development will be to open the first phase of a multi-ape Cognition Centre; a new Chimpanzee moated island complex will open in 2016/7 enabling us to care for the largest chimpanzee grouping Twycross Zoo has seen in its history. We will need your help and support to develop the zoo forwards; our main income is still from visitor tickets, sponsorships and memberships. Here’s to an exciting 2015 and beyond!
