Twycross Zoo has joined forces with EAZA and other zoos and organisations across Europe to help reduce the carbon footprint on our great planet! Our objective is to focus on, and encourage, ways in which each and every one of us can live a more sustainable life.
The Pole to Pole Campaign is about the Poles, the wonderfully varied species that are living there and the threats they face. The polar regions are very vulnerable to a wide range of climate change impact factors, all of which interact to further increase the threat to these regions and of course, the wider world.
The global average surface temperature has increased by 0.8% since the late 19th century, but this rise has been considerably more in Polar regions. In the Arctic temperatures have increased sharply over the past half a century, around a 3-4 degree increase in most areas. The Antarctic Peninsula average annual temperatures have risen above 2.5 degrees.
Our planet is changing, quicker than ever seen before. Rising sea levels and an increase in extreme weather events is apparent worldwide. Now is the time we need to act. We need to make an effort, spreading the message to friends and family, working as a global community to lower our energy use.
Twycross Zoo will be holding a number of events over the next 18 months to coincide with the Pole to Pole campaign – so be sure to keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for news of upcoming events, interesting facts, and simple ways you can reduce your ecological impact on our precious planet!
We will also be offering brand new Education Sessions based on the Pole to Pole EAZA campaign on climate change for visiting schools along with a teachers pack for post session discussion!
