A pair of pawfect Sumatran tigers arrive safe and sound at Twycross Zoo

After travelling over 700 miles via road and sea from France, our newest residents, critically endangered Sumatran tigers Jahly and Sialang, have arrived safely.

Female, Jahly, came from Boissierre Zoo, near Nantes, whilst her new male housemate, Sialang, used to live at Obterre Zoo. Upon arrival the pair moved in to separate accommodation in their state-of-the-art, £multi-million habitat, which at 3,000m² is one of the largest purpose built Sumatran tiger habitats in the UK.

As with all new animal arrivals, the duo are currently being looked after by our experienced keepers and veterinary team as they settle in to their ROARsome new home. Sialang has been exploring his indoor habitat for the first time which features multiple hot rocks for extra comfort and wooden logs to have a scratch on!

Matyas Liptovszky, Head of Life Sciences said: “We are delighted to welcome Jahly and Sialang to Twycross Zoo today and our experienced animal and veterinary teams will be looking after them and helping them settle in before they meet our visitors from 13th July, for the Summer Holidays.

“It has been over 15 years since tigers were last at Twycross Zoo and we now look forward to being part of the European breeding programme, helping to support and grow this critically endangered species.”

Twycross Zoo Members have the first chance to see Jahly and Sialang, explore the new habitat, listen to tiger talks and take part in a keeper Q&A session at exclusive preview days taking place on 28th, 29th & 30th June, 5th, 6th & 7th July, from 12-2pm.
