Action Indonesia Day 2024
11th Aug 2024
Action Indonesia Day is celebrated to highlight and raise awareness for the incredible work and achievements of Action Indonesia, which focuses their conservation efforts on four main species: the anoa, babirusa, banteng and Sumatran tiger.
As part of the Global Species Management Plan (GSMP), Action Indonesia collaborates with more than 50 worldwide organisations to safeguard these unique native species.
Twycross Zoo recently joined the project through the education working group, whose vital role is to help raise awareness of these threatened animals both in and outside of their natural habitats, and to input into training workshops to be delivered to zoo educators and national park staff in Indonesia.
As a zoo, we are not only involved in the education working group but are also proud to be home to one of the species under the GSMPāour Sumatran tigers are part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) and therefore integrated into the broader GSMP efforts. These international, collaborative conservation plans are essential for the long-term survival of species like the Sumatran tiger and are overseen by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
The Sumatran tiger GSMP joined forces with the Action Indonesia GSMP in 2018, adopting the "One Plan" approach. This strategy ensures that all parties responsible for conserving a species, whether located within or outside the animal's natural range, work together toward a shared goal. Collaboration is key, and our team at Twycross Zoo is proud to be part of this global effort.
Action Indonesia seeks to educate and raise awareness about these incredible animals, deliver training, monitor populations, and collaborate with population management programmes to ensure the long-term survival of these species.
As we continue to build on this foundation of awareness, we encourage everyone to join us in celebrating Action Indonesia Day by learning more about these endangered species and supporting the work being done to protect them.
