Caring for Our Birds After Storm Goretti: How You Can Help

21st Jan 2026

On Thursday 8 January, extreme winds and snowfall from Storm Goretti resulted in the collapse of two of our aviaries, affecting a number of bird species including finches, cranes, speckled pigeons and hamerkop.

Thanks to the swift response of our expert teams, the birds were quickly secured.

While insurance will contribute towards rebuilding the damaged aviaries, unfortunately there are immediate and ongoing welfare costs associated with caring for the birds while their new homes are designed and built.

The appeal is focused on supporting animal welfare during this interim period.

Lynsey Bugg, Senior Curator at Twycross Zoo said:

“Our absolute priority has been the welfare of the birds. Our teams acted quickly to make sure they were safe, warm and well cared for following the storm.

“While insurance will help us rebuild, there are vital care costs during this period that aren’t fully covered. We’re asking for support to help us look after the birds while we rebuild their new homes.”

Now that we understand the full impact, and as we continue to care for the birds while rebuilding their new homes, we’re reaching out to you for support.

“We wanted to be responsible and transparent before asking for help. Once we had clarity, we felt it was right to invite our community to support us in caring for the birds during this recovery period.”

Donations will go directly towards supporting the birds’ while rebuilding work takes place.

The appeal is live now, if you would like and are able to donate, please do so here
