Behind the scenes filming with BBC’s The One Show for Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday...

12th May 2026

We celebrated 100 years of Sir David Attenborough with BBC’s The One Show.

To honour his incredible legacy, members of our team joined children from Leicester’s Ninth Scout Group - the same Scout Group Sir David was a part of as a child - to plant 100 trees, marking each year of his life.

Here’s how it went...

A trip to the Global Conservation Centre

The team from BBC’s The One Show joined our Chief Conservation Officer, Dr Rebecca Biddle, for an exclusive look around the building work of the Global Conservation Centre.

The £25 million development will become the hub of our global conservation work, cutting-edge scientific research, and education programmes; but also, a community space to inspire, train and facilitate the next generation of conservation leaders under one roof

Inspiring Conservationists

Sir David Attenborough has played a huge role in inspiring many of the people behind our conservation work to pursue their passion for wildlife - including our Chief Conservation Officer, Dr Rebecca Biddle and Education Ranger, Finn Holmes-Kellet.

As part of the film, both Rebecca and Finn were interviewed to share how the impact of Sir David's work has inspired them.

100 trees for 100 years

As a way to commemorate 100 years of Sir David Attenborough's life, our amazing team and members of the Leicester's Ninth Scout Group came together on our brand-new nature reserve expansion to plant 100 years for every year of his life.

Alongside the celebrations, we also announced a major expansion of our nature reserve, following the recent purchase of an additional 14-hectares of land dedicated entirely to nature restoration.

The expansion will increase our existing reserve more than fourfold, creating vital new habitats for native wildlife including woodland, wildflower meadows and wetlands, as part of our commitment to protecting 30% of our land for nature by 2030.
