Celebrating the life of Dr Jane Goodall...
1st Oct 2025
Our charity joins the global conservation community in celebrating the life of Dr Jane Goodall DBE, one of the most iconic figures in wildlife conservation and primatology, who has sadly passed away today (1 October 2025).
The world has lost one of its greatest conservation leaders, and a true inspiration - even inspiring the name of our own Chimpanzee Eden habitat.
Dr Rebecca Biddle, Chief Conservation Officer at Twycross Zoo, and Vice Chair of EAZA, said:
"Jane Goodall was a true pioneer, not only for conservation but also as a woman who inspired so many of us to follow in her path. She showed the world that empathy, courage and dedication brings people together to collaborate for conservation. She showed the world that these skills are vital in order to save the species and habitats she cared about so deeply.
Through her groundbreaking 'Roots & Shoots' community action programme, Jane demonstrated that every individual has the power to make a difference, no matter their age or background. Her commitment to education and capacity building has empowered local communities, young people, and future leaders to take ownership of conservation.
The impact Jane has made is immeasurable, and her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, living on in the people, projects and places she touched across the globe."
FROM THE ARCHIVES...
This special message was recorded by Jane in 2015, for Twycross Zoo... We're still proud to be delivering incredible care and conservation efforts for four great ape species, educating our many visitors and advocating for wildlife across the globe.
Over 10 years later, those 'new developments', including our Chimpanzee Eden, have been realised and our charity continues to pioneer ways to support global conservation for the species that need it most... we hope sheโd be even more proud today, as we build our Global Conservation Centre - a home for endangered species, science, education and action to protect wildlife.
Thank you Jane, for everything. We will treasure these words forever ๐
A special thank you to Dr Sharon Redrobe OBE (Twycross Zoo CEO 2013-2022) for sharing this with us from the archives
