Local baker donates incredible 60th Anniversary cake to Twycross Zoo

Local baker and 53-year visitor of Twycross Zoo, Lesley Walster, has surprised the zoo with an incredible cake to celebrate our milestone 60th anniversary.
Lesley Walster who runs ‘Cakes by Mad Cake Maker’ in Ashby-De-La-Zouch surprised the Twycross Zoo team this week (Monday 29 May), when she arrived on-site to enjoy a day with her family with the four-tiered masterpiece in hand.
Lesley has been visiting Twycross Zoo since she was a little girl and to-date regularly visits the zoo with her family. The local baker donated the creation to celebrate the zoo’s diamond anniversary, which was marked on Friday 26 May, and has supported the 100-acre site previously to help raise funds during the coronavirus pandemic by auctioning cakes in aid of the conservation charity.
The zoo-themed cake features a wide variety of animals that visitors can see during their visit to Twycross Zoo including species such as a chimpanzee, gorilla, giraffe, penguin, tiger and rhino.
On 26 May 1963, founders of Twycross Zoo, business partners Molly Badham MBE and Nathalie Evans opened the gates of the Midlands-based zoo, embarking on a journey that would allow them to continue accomplishing their dream: caring for endangered primates. Since its opening 60 years ago, Twycross Zoo has evolved into a world-renowned conservation charity, winning countless awards for animal welfare, education and business.
To celebrate its diamond anniversary, the zoo is inviting visitors to experience ‘The Great Big Zoobilee’ – a brand-new, 60s-themed birthday event. Until Sunday 4 June, the conservation charity is offering families the chance to step back into the swinging sixties in celebration of its diamond anniversary and enjoy an unforgettable day out.
