As a volunteer, you'll:

  • Greet visitors and provide directions to key areas of the zoo
  • Talk to our visitors, sharing information about the zoo's role as a conservation charity and providing a fun and informative visitor experience.
  • Answer general visitor questions about directions, timings, and locations.
  • Highlight the unique adaptations or conservation challenges of selected species.
  • Explain the zoo's conservation projects and strategy.
  • Encourage appropriate interaction with animals and provide guidance during talks or educational activities.
Please note: volunteers will not participate in the direct care or treatment of our animals.

About you: 

  • Be aged 16 or over 
  • Be passionate about people, animals, and conservation
  • Have a willingness to listen, learn and keep up to date with information
  • A strong understanding of what guest obsession entails and to be happy to contribute to this. 
  • Be reliable 
  • Maintain a positive attitude and greet visitors with a smile 

We're not looking for animal experts! A passion for wildlife and conservation can be developed through training and experience

FAQ's

Most volunteers commit to one day per week, starting at 10:00 am and finishing at approximately 4:00 pm. This is a flexible role, so you can decide your start and finish times within these hours in agreement with your volunteer coordinator.

You will receive comprehensive information packs and initial training, with periodic training events provided to support you in your role.
A designated volunteer coordinator will be assigned each day to provide you with tasks and guidance for that day. Additional support will also be available from our education rangers, officers, and the Head of Conservation Education.

 

Please be aware there is a lot of walking and standing involved with this role.

During your induction a member of the Conservation Education Team will talk you through the Risk Assessment / other health & Safety information for this role

All volunteers must be aged 16 years or over.
