The 20th East Midlands Chamber Enterprising Women Awards on Friday 3 March have conferred a special accolade on Dr Sharon Redrobe, CEO of Twycross Zoo, who has been recognised among the most successful business women in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire as she was named the Inspirational Woman of the Year. The coveted award honours the achievements of local business women, whose journey motivates others to strive for success.

Over the past three years, Dr Redrobe has been leading both the operational and cultural transformation at Twycross Zoo, which is reflected in the significantly improved business results of the charity. A dynamic leader, Dr Redrobe manages a 4-member Executive Team, who work together towards a common goal of transforming the zoo into a world-class conservation organisation and visitor attraction.

With over 25 years’ experience of working in academia, the charity sector and business, Dr Redrobe has demonstrated her drive and determination to succeed in delivering the new strategic vision for Twycross Zoo, developing the site through its ambitious £55million Masterplan and establishing the organisation as an important player in global wildlife conservation efforts.

Her life‐long fascination for wildlife and a strong belief in the role modern zoos must play in conservation, whilst remaining relevant and supported by the public, guide Dr Redrobe in making difficult decisions, such as the recent announcement by the zoo to re-home its all-female herd of Asian elephants.

Dr Redrobe’s unique combination of animal welfare sensibility, scientific rigour and business acumen has been instrumental in rejuvenating Twycross Zoo and her efforts have been recognised, having won the Institute of Directors West Midlands Director of the Year 2016 award in the Not for Profit category and most recently having been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2017.

Dr Sharon Redrobe says, “Having been recognised by one of the most important business bodies in our region is a great honour. I am flattered to think that my journey can inspire more women and wildlife enthusiasts to take on a challenge and do their best to fulfil their dreams. I am lucky to have a very supportive family and friends and also my wonderful colleagues who are all part of the reason I have been chosen to receive this award.”

Twycross Zoo is open to the public from 10am to 5pm. For more information call 0844 474 1777, or visit www.twycrosszoo.org.
