Wildtracks

The central American spider monkey is one of the world’s 25 most endangered primate species due to a rapidly declining population. The major threats this species face are deforestation, forest fragmentation and the illegal wildlife trade. Spider monkeys play an important role in the Belize forest ecosystem through seed dispersal and ecotourism.

    Following a 95% success rate of introducing endangered black howler monkeys in Belize, Wildtracks are now building capacity for rehabilitated spider monkey releases in Belize’s protected North East Corridor, which will also include post-release tracking. Wildtracks take in often injured and sick individuals confiscated by the Belize government in the illegal pet trade for rehabilitation.

    Twycross Zoo not only helps financially fund the release programme, but has also provided expertise and staff time. Matyas Liptovsky, Head of Life Sciences and Vet from Twycross Zoo travelled to Belize in January 2019 to conduct pre-release health assessments for five rehabilitated spider monkeys. By supporting Twycross Zoo you enable us to support Wildtracks and other conservation organisations to protect wildlife.
